Jays exploits as the University of Alabamas starting quarterback are well known. He led the team to an Alabama best 35-2-1 (.934) record, including three 10-win seasons, three SEC West titles and the 1992 National Championship. His senior year in 1994 saw him win the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and finish 5th in the Heisman Trophy balloting.
While at Alabama, Jay was a leader of the FCA chapter, and became a role model for the school and his state due to his stand for leadership and integrity.
Jay was drafted in the 5th Round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and played professional football for seven years, finishing his career in 2001 with a return home to play for the XFLs Birmingham Thunderbolts.
Jay began his Birmingham radio career with WYDE in August of 2001, where a successful stint led to a move to WJOX in 2002. Jay has been a fixture on the stations morning show ever since. In 2006, he was joined by Al DelGreco and Tony Kurre, and the show became known as The Opening Drive. The rest is history.
Jay married country singer-songwriter Sara Evans in 2008. The couple have seven children, all from previous relationships.
Jay is the author of the University of Alabama Football Vault: The Story of the Crimson Tide, 1892-2007. It is available at Amazon.com and bookstores everywhere. His story In Due Time, written with Wayne Atchison, sold over 70,000 copies after its release in 1995.
